Meningitis Risk Factors

Meningitis Risk Factors

• Prematurity / low birth weight increase the risk [8, 9, 10]
• Lack of fever increases the risk [11,12]
• Febrile seizures do not pose a significant risk [13]
• In neonates invasive procedures and prior antibiotics use increase the risk [14]
• There is conflicting information whether prior antibiotic use in general increases the risk [15, 16]

Meningococcal Infections Risk Factors
• Preterm birth increases the risk [17, 18]
• Maternal Smoking / passive smoking increase the risk [18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26]
• Breastfeeding reduces the risk [23, 27]
• Deprivation increases the risk [25, 27, 28]
• Certain lifestyle factors increase the risk. Various studies have identified risk factors often found among students, such as the amount of bar attendance, clubbing, rave attendance, drug taking, etc and correlated them to the risk of adverse outcomes. [17, 21, 29]
